I perceive social media as personal enjoyment. I like to see the positive things that my friends and my family are doing in their lives. I like that it could also facilitate communication with people that are faraway. I also like the convenience of finding what is happening around the world.
Social media should be used as a tool to communicate among students, teachers, parents, and community in a positive manner where they all can come together. I also think it would be great tool to use to connect with professionals that are related to the class content and educational student interest to promote real world learning. I feel this could be a great 21st century learning tool for students to seek and apply their learning beyond the classroom.
However, despite the great possibilities, the critical issues that social media faces is that there is no control once information has been shared. Censorship is a problem. Students need to be aware of digital citizenship. Also, students need to have professional social media accounts to separate their personal lives. Connecting with personal social media accounts may discourage educators to use them.
I think if we had more control or had more options of what people post or share on social media (profanity, inappropriate images and content) and who we share it with, I do believe it can work in a classroom and make great impact on learning.
Quizlet: An amazing Study Tool for Vocabulary
1. How long did it take to get up to speed on how to use the tool proficiently?
Quizlet took about three tries of creating class sets to understand how to use the program, it’s very user friendly. I also upgraded so it can allow me to have access to more features (pictures, translations with interpretation, and adding audio).
2. What worked well for you and what didn’t when using the tool with your students or for your own project?
The purpose for me to use this program was to use as a tool for my inverted instruction model. I didn’t want students to be overwhelmed with learning a lot of vocabulary in class, and I wanted students to speak and apply content in class than trying to learn vocabulary. The plan was for the students to practice quizlet at home, and as a warm-up for 10 minutes in the begining in class. Students did learn the vocabulary very fast, and were engaged with the games that quizlet provides to support learning. There were two problems that didn’t go well. One, a quarter of my students were not practicing at home, even if it was an assigned homework assignment, secondly, accountability in my part. I to make students accountable for practicing their vocabulary, so I would not know if they were actually practicing unless I gave them a vocabulary quiz the next day the homework was assigned.
3. Were you using the right tool for the right job? How do you know?
I do feel this is the right tool for the job, vocabulary, and with an accountability system in place to ensure students are practicing at home, it will get the job done. However, I would like to look into other studying learning tools so students may have variety learning vocabulary and prevent students from getting bored using quizlet.
